Goodbye is never easy. Pictures never carry your warmth. The footprint and impacts of your tremendous teachings and powerful lectures shall always endure and live in my heart and no words can fully describe that. With deepest thoughts and everlasting love, Mr. Kalantari my dearest lecturer!

Tomorrow I die. Tomorrow I die, and today I want to tell the world what happened and thus perhaps free my soul from the horrible weight which lies upon it.But listen! Listen, and you shall hear how I have been destroyed.

When I was a child, I had a natural goodness of soul which led me to love animals — all kinds of animals, but especially those animals we call pets, animals which have learned to live with men and share their homes with them. There is something in the love of these animals which speaks directly to the heart of the man who has learned from experience how uncertain and changeable is the love of other men.

I was quite young when I married. You will understand the joy I felt to find that my wife shared with me my love for animals. Quickly she got for us several pets of the most likeable kind. We had birds, some goldfish, a fine dog, and a cat.

The cat was a beautiful animal, of unusually large size, and entirely black. I named the cat Pluto, and it was the pet I liked best. I alone fed it, and it followed me all around the house. It was even with difficulty that I stopped it from following me through the streets.

Our friendship lasted, in this manner, for several years, during which, however, my own character became greatly changed. I began to drink too much wine and other strong drinks.

As the days passed I became less loving in my manner; I became quick to anger; I forgot how to smile and laugh. My wife — yes, and my pets, too, all except the cat — were made to feel the change in my character.

One night I came home quite late from the inn, where I now spent more and more time drinking. Walking with uncertain step, I made my way with effort into the house. As I entered I saw — or thought I saw — that Pluto, the cat, was trying to stay out of my way, to avoid me. This action, by an animal which I had thought still loved me, made me angry beyond reason. My soul seemed to fly from my body. I took a small knife out of my coat and opened it. Then I took the poor animal by the neck and with one quick movement I cut out one of its fear-filled eyes!

Slowly the cat got well. The hole where its eye had been was not a pretty thing to look at, it is true; but the cat no longer appeared to suffer any pain. As might be expected, however, it ran from me in fear whenever I came near. Why should it not run? Yet this did not fail to anger me. I felt growing inside myself a new feeling. Who has not, a hundred times, found himself doing wrong, some evil thing for no other reason than because he knows he should not? Are not we humans at all times pushed, ever driven in some unknown way to break the law just because we understand it to be the law?

One day, in cold blood, I tied a strong rope around the cat’s neck, and taking it down into the cellar under the house I hung it from one of the wood beams above my head. I hung it there until it was dead. I hung it there with tears in my eyes, I hung it because I knew it had loved me, because I felt it had given me no reason to hurt it, because I knew that my doing so was a wrong so great, a sin so deadly that it would place my soul forever outside the reach of the love of God!

That same night, as I lay sleeping, I heard through my open window the cries of our neighbors. I jumped from my bed and found that the entire house was filled with fire. It was only with great difficulty that my wife and I escaped. And when we were out of the house, all we could do was stand and watch it burn to the ground. I thought of the cat as I watched it burn, the cat whose dead body I had left hanging in the cellar. It seemed almost that the cat had in some mysterious way caused the house to burn so that it could make me pay for my evil act, so that it could take revenge upon me.

Months went by, and I could not drive the thought of the cat out of my mind. One night I sat in the inn, drinking as usual. In the corner I saw a dark object that I had not seen before. I went over to see what it could be. It was a cat, a cat almost exactly like Pluto. I touched it with my hand and petted it, passing my hand softly along its back. The cat rose and pushed its back against my hand.

Suddenly, I realized that I wanted the cat. I offered to buy it from the innkeeper, but he claimed he had never seen the animal before. As I left the inn, it followed me, and I allowed it to do so. It soon became a pet of both my wife and myself. The morning after I brought it home, however, I discovered that this cat, like Pluto, had only one eye.

How was it possible that I had not noticed this the night before? This fact only made my wife love the cat more. But I myself found a feeling of dislike growing in me. My growing dislike of the animal only seemed to increase its love for me. It followed me, followed me everywhere, always. When I sat, it lay down under my chair. When I stood up it got between my feet and nearly made me fall. Wherever I went, it was always there. At night, I dreamed of it. And I began to hate that cat!

One day my wife called to me from the cellar of the old building where we were now forced to live. As I went down the stairs, the cat, following me as always, ran under my feet and nearly threw me down.

In sudden anger, I took a knife and struck wildly at the cat. Quickly my wife put out her hand and stopped my arm. This only increased my anger and, without thinking, I turned and put the knife’s point deep into her heart! She fell to the floor and died without a sound.

I spent a few moments looking for the cat, but it was gone. And I had other things to do, for I knew I must do something with the body, and quickly. Suddenly, I noted a place in the wall of the cellar where stones had been added to the wall to cover an old fireplace which was no longer wanted.

The walls were not very strongly built, and I found I could easily take down those stones. Behind them there was, as I knew there must be, a hole just big enough to hold the body. With much effort I put the body in and carefully put the stones back in their place. I was pleased to see that it was quite impossible for anyone to know that a single stone had been moved.

Days passed. Still there was no cat. A few people came and asked about my wife, but I answered them easily. Then one day several officers of the police came. Certain that they could find nothing, I asked them in and went with them as they searched.

Finally, they searched the cellar from end to end. I watched them quietly, and, as I expected, they noticed nothing. But as they started up the stairs again, I felt myself driven by some unknown inner force to let them know, to make them know, that I had won the battle.

“The walls of this building,” I said, “are very strongly built; it is a fine old house.” And as I spoke, I struck with my stick that very place in the wall behind which was the body of my wife. Immediately I felt a cold feeling up and down my back as we heard coming out of the wall itself a horrible cry.

For one short moment, the officers stood looking at each other. Then quickly they began to pick at the stones, and in a short time they saw before them the body of my wife, black with dried blood and smelling of decay. On the body’s head, its one eye filled with fire, its wide open mouth the color of blood, sat the cat, crying out its revenge!

to strike while the iron is hot

sweetheart deal  blue chip company  banker’s hours  cut corners  hard sells  hard sells  at a loss  cut backs  broke even  gain ground  selling like hotcakes  in the black  in the red  big gun  take it public  to strike while the iron is hot   ball park estimate   crunch the numbers  in black and white  get a break  bang for the buck

There are many special terms in the world of business. The following story is about a woman who has a business making signs. She tells us about a recent sweetheart deal.(معامله جذاب و پرسود) She made a deal with a friend, and they both made a profit.

Here is Faith Lapidus with that story.

I had started a small company several years ago. I worked hard to make it successful. It was a sign-making business. It was a small company, not a blue chip company. (شرکت بزرگ و معروف) It was not known nationally for the quality of its signs. It did not make millions of dollars in profits. And it was private. It was not a public company with shares traded on the stock market.

Still, I worked hard building up my business. I did not work only a few hours each day -- no banker’s hours for me. ( نه مثل ساعت کار بانکی که محدود است ) Instead I spent many hours each day, seven days a week, trying to grow the company. I never cut corners (از هزینه ها زدن برای) tried to save on expenses. I made many cold calls.(تماس با شماره های مختلف با هدف فروش کالا یا خدمات) I called on possible buyers from a list of people I had never seen. Such calls were often hard sells. I had to be very firm.

Sometimes I sold my signs at a loss. (فروش با ضرر یا بدون سود) I did not make money on my product. When this happened, there were cut backs.  ( کاستن از هزینه ها) I had to use fewer supplies and reduce the number of workers. But after several years, the company broke even.(ضررکردن، به سود نرسیدن) Profits were equal to expenses. And soon after, I began to gain ground.(موفق تر شدن محبوبیت یافتن) My signs were selling very quickly. They were selling like hotcakes.(سریع به فروش رفتن)

I was happy. The company was moving forward and making real progress. It was in the black,(خوب شدن اوضاع مالی) not in the red. (خراب بودن اوضاع مالی) The company was making money, not losing it.

My friend knew about my business. He is a leader in the sign-making industry – a real big gun, (متنفذ و قدرتمند) if you know what I mean. He offered to buy my company. My friend wanted to take it public. (وارد بازار سهام کردن) He wanted to sell shares in the company to the general public.

My friend believed it was best to strike while the iron is hot. He wanted to take action at the best time possible and not wait. He offered me a ball park estimate (یک رقم تقریبی دادن) of the amount he would pay to buy my company. But I knew his uneducated guess was low. My company was worth much more. He asked his bean-counter (حسابدار)to crunch the numbers. ( حساب و کتاب دقیق کردن و قیمت دادن) That is, he asked his accountant to take a close look at the finances of my company and decide how much it was worth. Then my friend increased his offer.

My friend’s official offer was finally given to me in black and white. (تصویر روشن و بدون ابهام) It was written on paper and more than I ever dreamed. I was finally able to get a break. (فرصت خوبی به دست آوردن) I made a huge profit on my company, and my friend also got a bang for the buck. He got a successful business for the money he spent.

And that is the end of our business story. But even if you’re not in business, some of these expressions can be used in other situations.

For example, you can cut corners or get a break anywhere. Let’s say you are planning a party and don’t have enough money. You might have to cut corners on the food you serve. Or you could get a break by winning $100 on free food at your local grocery store!

The expression black and white can also mean a very clear choice that leaves no confusion. Sometimes we use it in the negative. Politics, for example, is not as black and white as some people may think. There are often shades of gray when dealing with complicated political issues and how they affect government policy.

And that’s all for this Words and Their Stories.

After listening to this story, you should strike while the iron is hot! While the expressions are still fresh in your mind, practice using them in a business conversation.

I’m Anna Matteo.

Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani, the Head of the Expediency Council and Iran’s former president from 1989 to 1997, died at hospital of a heart failure on Sunday at the age of 82.

The death of Ayatollah  Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, one of the key founding figures of Iran’s Islamic Revolution, shocked Iranians, leaving a huge grief in the hearts of the Iranian people and the Islamic Revolution followers.

During his presidency, Rafsanjani strongly believed that Iran needs economic changes and making balance between realism and Islamic ideology.

Rafsanjani pursued two pragmatic policies including solving economic problems that war had caused and improving Iran relations with other countries. He was widely known as "Generla of Construction" among politicians for his efforts in reconstructing the country after war.

He attempted to separate political issues from economic ones, resuming trade with the US regardless of the absence of diplomatic relationships between Iran and the United States. Hashemi Rafsanjani believed that Iran could not trust the United States to resume political relations between the two countries.

Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei

With pity and regret, I received the news of sudden demise of my old friend and comrade and companion during the time of Islamic struggles, and close colleague in long years during the period of the Islamic Republic, Hojjatoleslam Hajj Sheikh Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani.

The loss of a comrade and companion, the background of cooperation and the beginning of empathy and collaboration with whom dates back to 59 years ago, is hard and heart-rending. What difficulties and bottlenecks we went through over these scores of years and what joint ideas and empathy that in many junctures [of time] motivated us to make effort and tolerate [hardships] and accept risks along with each other on a common path.

His high intellect and unique sincerity in those years was a trustworthy point of reliance for all those who worked with him, especially for me.

Differences of viewpoints and opinions at certain junctures in this long period [of cooperation] could never sever the friendship ties, which started at Bein-ol-Haramein in [the city of] Karbala, and temptations by evil ones, who in recent years tried with intensity and seriousness to take advantage of these theoretical differences, could not undermine his profound personal compassion for this humble one.

He was a unique example of the first generation of those who struggled against the tyrant regime of Shah and was among those who suffered along this risky and honorable path.

[Going through] years of imprisonment and tolerance of [brutal] tortures by SAVAK and resistance against all these and then [accepting] crucial positions during the Sacred Defense and [as] speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly and the Assembly of Experts and the likes of them were brilliant chapters in the bumpy life of this old struggler.

After the loss of Hashemi, I know of no other personality, with whom I had such a common experience over such a long period through thin and thick of this history-making period.

Now, this age-old struggler is present before God with a track record full of various kinds of efforts and endeavors and this is the fate of all of us, officials of the Islamic Republic.

I wish the divine forgiveness and mercy and clemency for him from the bottom of my heart and condole with his esteemed wife and children and brothers and other survivors.

President Rouhani

"And there is the type of man who gives his life to earn the pleasure of Allah: And Allah is full of kindness to (His) devotees" (Holy Quran)

In the days of H. H. Fatemeh Masumehs (SA) mourning and Amir Kabirs sad martyrdom, Iran sat mourning for its worthy commander and the national hero in fighting tyranny and colonisation went to meet his maker.

Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani was Rouhollah [Khomeini]s steadfast son, long-standing companion of the leader, distinguished and history-making figure of Islamic Revolution and somebody who was truly sympathetic towards people.

How meaningful it was in history that the legend of faith, patience, tolerance and moderation passed away on the very day that peoples uprising in defending the great Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Revolution.

Talking about Hashemi, whom I was beside for many years, is very difficult. He was a perfect example of a revolution-backer during the Iranian nation's fight under the leadership of late Imam.

Years of prison and torture did not separate him from that path. He always was one of the distinguished forerunners of the Islamic Revolution. It was him who never left Imam alone from Qom to Najaf, and from Paris to Tehran.

Hashemi is among the distinguished architects of the Islamic Republic of Iran; the Constitution, the Islamic Consultative Assembly, the Assembly of Experts of Leadership, the Presidency, the Expediency Discernment Council of the System, the Islamic Republic Party, the Army of the Guardians of the Islamic Revolution, the Construction Jihad and all institutions of the Islamic Revolution are indebted to this man of future and his wisdom and foresight.

He was loved by Imam [Khomeini] and a servant to people. Wherever he was responsible for, he was a source of serenity for Imam, the leader and the people. He was a capable analyst and knew the world well. His sermons during the hard times of the Sacred Defence filled people with tremendous spirit. In being subject to persecution, he was like his old companion, martyr Ayatollah Beheshti, easily enduring ingratitude.

Hashemi never feared war and always sought peace; he was both a courageous commander of Jihad and martyrdom, and the hero of negotiation for ending the war.

Talking about a man who truly was the foundation of state is not easy. He was Imam's confidant and the Supreme Leader's incomparable companion. He had lofty wishes for Iran and Iranians and made tireless efforts for the pride of our Islamic homeland until the last moment of his life.

He was subject to unkindness and showed loyalty. He did not agree with deviatingfrom the path of moderate Islam and considered the expediency of the system above all things. The understanding people of Iran are grateful of their servants and will pay their debts to the Commander of Construction.

Hashemi's name is so great that nobody can deny his effective role in every page of the history of the Islamic Movement from the first campaigns in the 1340s until the victory of the revolution and from his incomparable and excelling history in managing the country through the Sacred Defence era to all critical points until the last minutes of his life and his eternal life in the hearts of the grateful people of Iran. As our old and beloved Khomeini said once: "The hostiles should know that Hashemi is alive because the movement is alive".

I therefore, announce 3 days of public mourning and a day of public holiday and express my sincerest condolences over the loss of the great national hero, Islamic intellectual and incomparable asset of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Imam Mahdi (AS), the Supreme Leader, great Maraji, scholars and clerics, prominent figures of the revolution and the state, the grateful Iranian nation, especially the noble people of Kerman province and Rafsanjan town, all his companions and followers, especially his respectful family, his patient wife and also his children and brothers, praying to the Almighty for the great man's mercy and highest places before Him, as well as sitting close to the Immaculate Imams (AS) and his companion, Imam Khomeini (RA), his comrades and martyrs of the Islamic Revolution and all people.

Javad Zarif, Minister for Foreign Affairs

Contemporary history of Iran and the world would always remember him and Iranian nation would be grateful of his efforts.

to pay homage: to openly honor or worship someone or something.

Throngs of Cubans stream onto Havana's iconic Revolution Square to pay homage to Fidel Castro, kicking off an emotional, week-long farewell. Activists pay homage to Fidel Castro.

Wreath Laying Ceremony
