واژه های زبان و سعی در به خاطر سپردن آنها

واژه هایی که در متن یک روزنامه یا خبر به آن برمی خوریم، بعد از مدتی از ذهن پاک می شود. یکی از راههای جلوگیری از این روند یادگیری آنها همراه با مثال و همچنین مرور و تبادل آنها با دوستان است. اخیرا به همت تعدادی از دوستان، در شبکه اجتماعی Facebook محیطی برای این کار با نام English Fluency and efficiency فراهم شده است. مزیتی که در آن وجود دارد اینست که به مجرد اضافه شدن واژه ها در آن محیط، آنها برای ایمیل اعضا ارسال میشود. در اینجا تعدادی از این واژه ها که در چند ماه گذشته وارد شده اند ارائه می شود. با تشکر از حسین محمدی و سایرین

scrape the bottom of the barrel از ناچاری به چیزی متوسل شدن  They are really scraping the bottom of the barrel if they must give him a job. اگر مجبورند به او کاری بدهند پس جدا کفگیرشان به ته دیگ خورده.

sugarcoat موضوع يا واقعيت تلخ را خوب و شيرين نشان دادن

come round به هوش آمدن  James fainted when the air-conditioning stopped working. Two of his colleagues took care of him until he came round.

come into  به ارث بردن Peter came into a fortune when his father died.

Chasing rainbows: کار بیهوده انجام دادن ، به سمت سراب دویدن  Someone who is chasing rainbows is trying to get something they will never obtain. Example: She's trying to get into Harvard but I think she's chasing rainbows.

linger: درنگ کردن، تاخیر کردن، دیر رفتن، مردد بودن stay longer than usual, delay, persist, remain, move slowly.  If the intention of dialogue is merely to prevent cold conflict from turning hot, rather than to resolve differences, suspicion will linger.

redress: correction, remedy an injustice, compensate فریاد رسی، جبران خسارت ، تصحیح، التیام

precedent: previous legal decision serving as an authoritative rule. رویه قضایی، سابقه شدن  A case filed against this company and several of its managers could set a precedent.

out of the blue مثل اجل معلق، ناگهانی، غیرمنتظره As soon as the burglar stepped out of the house, a cop appeared out of the blue and busted him.

copycat: مقلد، تقلید - mimic, imitator, one who imitates the acts or works of others.  The violence in Geneva might also be copycat cases, following incidents in nearby France.

Lockstep: a way of marching in very close file, in which the leg of each per-son moves with and closely behind the corresponding leg of the person ahead. پیشروی افراد پشت سر یکدیگر، قدم آهسته Obama said the US and Israel were "in lockstep" in their policy towards Iran.. 

 yearning علاقه و اشتیاق فراوان deep longing, especially when accompanied by tenderness or sadness: a widower's yearning for his wife. She’s yearning for a lake or even for the sea.

Leeway: مهلت،راه گریز، فضای مانور  extra time, space, materials, or the like, within which to operate; margin: With ten minutes' leeway we can catch the train.

covet: میل به داشتن چیزی که متعلق به دیگری است  desire something that belongs to another, be envious.The party quest for a coveted second cabinet seat. 

pass the buck تقصیر را گردن دیگران انداختن، کاسه کوزه ها را سر کسی شکستن No one will take the blame for the mistake. They keep passing the buck.
هیچ کس تقصیر را به گردن نمی گیرد آنها مرتب تقصیر را گردن دیگری می اندازند.

carry the weight of the world on one's shoulders  جور دیگران را کشیدن
