اصطلاحات شامل Expressions , Idioms وSlangs در زبان انگلیسی همانند زبانهای دیگر نقش مهمی دارد اما برای زبان آموزان، استفاده از آنها باید همواره با حزم و احتیاط باشد. البته توجه به این نکته بیشتر در خصوص Slangs صدق می کند. کم عمرترین اصطلاحات و غیر رسمی ترین آنها همین Slangs می باشند. بنابراین بهتر آن است که از Idioms و Expressions برای یادگیری و بکارگیری در محاورات و حتی مذاکرات غیر رسمی استفاده گردد.
از آن دسته اصطلاحاتی(idioms) که برای توصیف منش یا شخصیت افراد متواضع، متکبر، واقع بین یا خیالاتی وجود دارد چند مورد مثال میزنم. متاسفانه در جامعه ما منش تواضع جای خود را به تدریج به تکبر داده است. یادآور می شوم اگر به دورادور خود نگاه کنید متوجه خواهید شد افرادی هستند که خود را نمیبازند و در ورطه تکبر نمی افتند و البته افرادی نیز هستند که به تمام معنی "خاکی" هستند...
DOWN TO EARTH: It is a pleasure to find someone who is down-to-earth. Such person is easy to talk and accepts other people as equals (just the opposite of someone who acts important or proud).
NOSE IN THE AIR: Someone who is filled with his own importance and pride, often without cause, is said to have "his nose in the air". There is no way a person with his nose in the air can be down-to-earth.
BOTH FEET ON THE GROUND: This is anotherAmerican expression that is similar in some ways to "down to earth". Someone with both on the ground is a person with a good understanding of reality. He has what is called "common sense." He may have dreams, but he doesn't allow them to block his knowledge of what is real.
HEAD IN THE CLOUDS: A man with his head in the clouds is a dreamer whose mind is not in the real world.
When we have both our feet firmly on the ground, when we are down-to-earth, we are realistic and we act honestly and openly toward others. Our lives are like the ground below us, solid and strong.
